OVERVIEW
Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time, but before you let that little furball loose, it's crucial to puppy-proof your home. Puppies are curious by nature, and what seems harmless to us can be a world of danger—or a chew toy—in their eyes. To save yourself some headaches (and possibly some furniture), take a few simple steps to make sure your space is safe and ready for your new four-legged family member.
01.
SECURE ELECTRICAL CORDS
To your puppy, a dangling cord is basically an invitation to chew. Save yourself from a potential disaster (and a trip to the vet) by securing and hiding all electrical cords.
02.
PREPARE TRASH CANS
Trash cans without lids? That’s just a buffet invitation for your little scavenger. Opt for lids or stash them away ands save yourself from cleaning up a disaster zone.
03.
REMOVE TEMPTING ITEMS
If it’s chewable, it’s a toy—at least in your puppy’s eyes. So, do yourself a favor and pick up anything you’d rather not see shredded or slobbered on.
04.
PROTECT RUGS & CARPETS
To a puppy, rugs are just indoor grass, perfect for potty breaks. Roll them up if you can; it’ll save you the headache of stains and make house training a simpler affair.
05.
CHECK FOR HAZARDS
Rodent traps and pest poisons might be out of sight, but they’re not out of reach for a curious puppy. Double-check that these dangers are stashed away securely.
06.
FENCE CHECK
Ensure your fence is secure and tall enough to prevent escapes. Puppies can squeeze through gaps or dig underneath, so patch any weak spots.
By taking these steps, you’ll create a safer environment for your new puppy and avoid some common early mishaps.
