"I don’t believe in turning dogs into robots. My training gives puppies the space to make mistakes and learn as they go. Pets will never be perfect, but neither will we—
and that’s perfectly okay."

FROM GUIDE DOG TRAINER…
For over a decade, Alyssa has been training guide dogs for people who are blind and visually impaired at Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights, NY. She started in 2010 and quickly found her way into the Specialized Training Department. After a 3-year apprenticeship, she became a Qualified Guide Dog Mobility Instructor, tackling everything from emergency traffic responses to platform edge avoidance—and yes, even teaching dogs to ride escalators. If she can teach dogs to handle that, she can definitely help you raise your pup like a pro!

…TO FAMILY DOG TRAINER
Alyssa has been working professionally with families and their dogs since 2005. She founded AJ Dog Training, her own dog training business, in 2013. Over the years, she’s worked with dogs of all shapes and sizes, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. Alyssa knows that no two dogs are the same. When she adopted her 5-year-old greyhound, who had never set foot in a house (and had no clue how to use stairs), she focused on life skills and boosting confidence rather than teaching sit and stay. So, whatever your dog’s quirks, she’s got you covered!

My training philosophy is built on the foundation of positive reinforcement and mutual respect. I believe that every puppy is unique, with their own personality, strengths, and challenges. My approach is all about celebrating those differences while guiding your puppy toward becoming a well-mannered and confident dog. I focus on creating a positive and encouraging environment where your puppy can thrive. Training should be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your pup, and I aim to foster a strong bond between you two through clear communication, consistency, and plenty of praise. My goal is to set your puppy up for success, helping them develop good habits and social skills that will last a lifetime.

I've spent over 20 years in professionally training dogs, honing my skills and learning from the best. I completed a rigorous 3-year apprenticeship at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which earned me the title of Qualified Guide Dog Mobility Instructor. There, I trained guide dogs to navigate everything from busy city streets to complex environments. I also hold a BA in Psychology from the University of Maryland, which gives me a deep understanding of animal behavior and learning principles. This combination of hands-on experience and academic knowledge has shaped me into a well-rounded puppy specialist, ready to tackle any challenge your furry friend might bring!

Training guide dogs is a journey of patience, precision, and profound reward. When you start working with these dogs, they’re already adults—past the puppy stage, but full of potential and ready to learn. These dogs come to you with a foundation of basic obedience, so your role is to build on that and guide them through the advanced skills they’ll need as reliable partners for someone who depends on them.
The training involves a mix of advanced obedience, socialization, and highly specialized tasks. You work on teaching the dogs to navigate obstacles, stop at curbs, and handle unexpected situations like traffic or loud noises. Each dog learns at their own pace, and a big part of the job is figuring out how to communicate effectively with each unique personality to bring out their best.
Beyond the technical training, there’s a deep emotional connection that develops. You’re not just refining their skills; you’re shaping a dog that will soon be the eyes for someone else. The bond that forms between trainer and dog is built on trust and mutual respect. While it can be tough to say goodbye when they’re ready to move on to their new life, knowing the profound impact they’ll have on someone’s independence and quality of life makes it all worthwhile. It’s a role filled with pride, joy, and a deep sense of purpose.

I’ll do a bit of both! My goal is to empower you to train your dog effectively. While I’ll work hands-on with your dog during our sessions, a big part of my job is teaching you the skills and techniques you’ll need to continue training at home. This way, you and your pup build a strong bond and can tackle any challenges that come your way. Think of me as your guide, helping you both along the path to success!

The results you can expect from training largely depend on your goals, your dog’s personality, and how much time and effort you put into the process. With consistent practice and patience, you’ll see improvements in your dog’s behavior, from basic obedience to more advanced skills. Training can help reduce unwanted behaviors like jumping or pulling on the leash, and it can strengthen your bond with your dog, making them more confident and well-mannered. While every dog learns at their own pace, the key is consistency and positive reinforcement. With dedication, you’ll be amazed at what your dog can achieve!
